FROM OUR FOUNDERS...

“The best Sri Lanka itinerary is not something we can repeat. Each trip we curate depends on how well we get to know your interests and hobbies. Nevertheless, we are happy to share a selection of Sri Lanka holidays with something for everyone. Each vacation is customized to offer visitors – deep learning about our unique island, with a combination of slow travel, rest, and relaxation- all spiced up with the world heritage sites of Sri Lanka’s cultural triangle, the island’s famous story about Ceylon Tea, meeting locals and more. We would love you to meet, cook, and taste great food from local farms to table experiences far away from everything, learning about elephants and leopards with our naturalist guides who share wonderful jungle stories about extensive wilderness areas and sunshine on hundreds of miles of our favorite beaches. Ask us for luxury juxtaposed with a night or two of barefoot sophistication in selected eco-lodges or a night of expedition glamping.”

WHY CONSIDER SRI LANKA?

The Wildlife

Sri Lanka is one of those unique, smaller countries with a biodiversity hotspot. It has two monsoon seasons, making it a perfect year-round wildlife destination outside Africa. With such a smaller landmass, thirteen times the size of the province of Ontario, Canada, it has one of the highest rates of biological endemism in the world. With 25 National Parks, 35 endemic species of birds, and 21 endemic mammals among countless other wild animal species, game drives in Sri Lanka’s popular National Parks like Wilpattu, Yala, Udawalawe, Gal Oya and Minneriya tempt safari goers with an incredible species density per square kilometer.

Guests can safari exploring magnificent plains to spot playful herds of wild elephants gathering at a water hole. Or watch the elusive leopard hunt its prey with insights from intriguing guides. Explore the deep seas on a yacht to spot Blue Whales, Sperm Whales, and Spinner Dolphins. Trek through virgin rainforests on birding expeditions or enjoy the luxury of tented safari lodges or glamping sites after a day out searching for an elusive sloth bear.

These elements can be tailor-made as part of your Sri Lanka trip or as an exclusive wildlife exploration with responsible wildlife outfitters who are non-intrusive. As a company, we strongly advocate against elephant back rides and the display of captive wild animals, including snakes, turtles, and reptiles, for visitor entertainment. They’re a no-no on our trips. We support the initiatives of World Animal Protection, a Canadian non-profit organization for protecting wild animals worldwide, and strongly advocate against animal cruelty for tourism purposes.

The Culinary Scene in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is a unique destination for food lovers. One wonders why Sri Lanka’s colorful food has been somewhat overlooked in the world food scene. It has similarities with Thai food because of the heavy use of fresh coconut milk and southern Indian cuisine, as they both use dried powdered spices. As an island on the ancient trade routes, there are inspired recipes, so you’ll find Arabian, Malaysian, Portuguese, Dutch, and British influences. Despite being the result of a cultural potpourri, Sri Lankan food is invariably distinct, and once you’ve visited, the mere scent of curry leaves will whisk you back to Sri Lanka.

A typical meal is composed of rice with a selection of curries, with coconut cream used liberally to soften the blow of the chili, followed by a delicious pudding such as buffalo curd with treacle syrup or fried bananas with mango ice cream. Around the coast, expect fresh prawns and calamari being hauled in by local fishermen, ready to be cooked with fragrant spices for dinner at a local eatery. Sri Lanka is a well- sought-after destination for vegetarians. Curries of dhals(lentils) and fresh vegetables are abundant.

There are many opportunities to learn how to cook Sri Lankan food, and it’s worth taking some Sri Lankan spices home to experiment with in your kitchen.
Coconut water is the staple refresher, and coconut palm sap, tapped from the unopened flowers, produces Toddy, a mildly intoxicating drink with sweet and sour undertones. For the brave-hearted, there’s a stronger version of Toddy called Arrack, which is toddy fermented to create a drink reminiscent of whisky and rum. It’s loved by locals, best drunk on the rocks, and is famously potent –don’t say we didn’t warn you!

We always include visits to local eateries, farms, and villages to get our visitors up close and personal with the food Sri Lankans consume. Looking for an itinerary that focuses on Sri Lankan cuisine? Check out our Foodie Lovers of Sri Lanka tour.

Sri Lanka - A tiny island with big ideas

Travel to faraway places like Sri Lanka should be more than a sun and fun diversion from our lives. Sri Lanka gives you not just a unique holiday but the power to be transformative and connect with people from different walks of life. New experiences in unfamiliar places like Sri Lanka let us connect with the world outside our comfort zone and allow us to contemplate deeper into our mind, body, spirit, and soul. That is what we think Sri Lanka will do for you.

We invite you to explore 2600 years of recorded history that Sri Lanka teaches you or go under the tutelage of expert naturalists to admire the tiny island’s myriad fauna and flora. Get your adrenaline pumping by taking up a climate-conscious hike in Sri Lanka’s unique highlands that gave Sri Lanka’s a gift to the world, the Ceylon tea, rafting the flowing rivers, or enjoying the wilderness, spending time glamping in the bush. Or connect with rural life and meet local artisans, do Yoga, learn to meditate, or those looking for spiritual learning, ask our guides about the great philosophy, Buddhism, which thrives on the island.

On this page, you will discover a sample list of extraordinary experiences. It is just a faint list and a few thought starters. Leave the details to us. If nothing relates to your desires, we love to stitch together an itinerary that covers your interest, the snippets of all that is written, and much more; each trip supports Ayubowan’s sustainable slow luxury experiences with a positive impact.

Want your trip to be more impactful? There are plenty of ways to give back, go beyond being just a tourist by staying at a local farmstead and learning the Sri Lankan way of life on the ground, care for the endangered wildlife, teach the children in the impoverished regions of the island, or ask your guides for simpler ways to make an impact like planting trees or donating livestock for a poor farming family.

As with all our customized journeys in Sri Lanka, which are distinctively different from what is generally available with mainstream tour operators, we always go off the traditional tourist trail, catering to various types of adventure seekers, interests, and hobbies. We work hard to help you find the right Sri Lanka trip.

Our trip levels are based on the activity, travel style (whether travelling in relative comfort, experiencing active activities, combining both, or taking hard-core active trips), comfort levels in the destination, and the wide choice of accommodation available.

It is important to note, however, that these aren’t comprehensive guides but useful. These will help you to know, at a glance, if a trip is just the one for you. We ask you to carefully read the trip introductions, itineraries, and trip inclusions for an overview of the trip styles, the activities altitudes gained or lost, distances traveled, and the levels of difficulties.

These trips typically travel in relative comfort, stay at rated hotels, resort or lodge-based accommodations throughout, and point-to-point transportation in comfortable vehicles or trains. Trips offer opportunities to meet locals and have cultural interactions, guided sightseeing, simple town or village walks, climbing few steps, and little elevation gain or loss. Nevertheless, on these trips one must expect some culture shock as you will be exposed to a different culture. The local food will be quite different from home. Respecting the local culture, religions, and lifestyles will make it easier to fit in and experience the adventure.

These trips typically have a combination of hotel nights and/or some safari, wilderness jungle lodges, tented camping, home or farm stays with local people and occasional hikes of anywhere between 2 to 4 hours on some days. Point-to-point transportation may include coach or train travel and local transport. Other physical activities are sometimes included, such as boat rides, biking, or walking on village and unpaved roads. The local food will be quite different from home.

Travelers should be physically fit and prepared for multiple hours of activity (e.g. hiking, biking) each day. Some included activities may be moderately challenging but can be opted out of. Reasonable fitness is recommended to enjoy the trip to the fullest. These are more full-on trips with early starts and longer days to make the most of your time away.

Travelers should be physically fit and prepared for multiple hours of activity (e.g. hiking, walking, biking) each day. Certain days may have more challenging physical activities, such as walking uphill/downhill on steep hills, forests, and muddy terrain. Busy itineraries packed with activities. Expect regular early starts and long days.

Get inspired and find your next life-changing adventure in Sri Lanka.
